As Pompeii is very old with many ancient historical features, there would be a lot to explore and discover.
Here are some places that you might think about visiting in your trip to Pompeii ** These are in NO specific order ** (Click here for a list of sites to visit and their ratings) - Tripadvisor Forum When Pompeii was first founded the forum was a small market place in the center of the town. After the expansion of Pompeii the forum became on the outskirts of the town. The forum became its full size in the second century BC. The north end was by the Temple of Jupiter and arches dedicated to Drusus and Tiberius. On the east side was the food market, the temple of Vespasian, the building of Eumachia, the sanctuary of the Lares Publici and the Comitium. The south end was by three municipal buildings. The west side was by the Basilica, the grain market, the Temple of Apollo and the warehouse. (More information here) Forum Baths These baths can still be seen in Pompeii today. The 3 main baths in Pompeii were the Forum Baths, the Stabian Baths and the central baths. The Forum Baths are the smallest of the 3 but the most elegant. Though its small, the Forum Baths contain everything needed for a full bathing ritual: Woman's and Men's sections, a changing room(apodyterium), A cold bath room (frigidarium), tepid bath room (tepidarium), hot bath room (calidarium), an exercise room and toilets. These baths were located at Via Thermarum (centre of Pompeii). These baths were built with public funds. (more information here) The Great Theater The theater is a place where comedies and tragedies were held for the public to watch. The theater was built in 3rd - 2nd Century BC. The seating area was the natural slope of the ridge, the theater was a semi circle shape. The seating capacity was 5000 people. An awning stretched over the entire seating area, to protect the spectators from the sun and rain. (more information here) Street of Tombs even though this is not inside Pompeii, it is outside from Herculaneum Gate to Herculaneum. It was forbidden to bury people inside the gates of Pompeii so this street has over 30 tombs on it. This is a busy road for travelers and also has shops along it. These tombs reflected the wealth of the dead person buried there. Sometimes family's would have meals at the tomb, they would put some wine down a tube to the tomb. this way they thought that the dead could share a meal with them. (more information here) Temple of Apollo The temple of Apollo is a temple dedicated to the Greek and roman god Apollo. This is the towns most religious building and has very ancient origins. The temple is located on the north side of the town. The temple is in the center of the a sacred enclosure was surrounded on all four sides by a group of columns. The temple has been fixed up a lot since its making. Many of these were because of earthquakes. The temple of Apollo was under construction when the Mt Vesuvius exploded. (more information here) |
