- History of Pompeii-
Pompeii has a lot of historical features as it has been dated from 79 AD. It has a long line of history behind this delicate city. The most famous historical fact about Pompeii was the eruption from Mt Vesuvius that literally ruined and destroyed Pompeii. Many people now visit Pompeii as they would like to explore more about the ruins and enjoy the beautiful culture. It is not a huge tourist attraction with approximately 2.5 million people visiting per year.
Pompeii is a city located near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania (Western Coast of Italy). There were approximately 20,000 people living there during the period of time of the eruption. As times past, Pompeii was a dead city as everyone has died, the city was only remained in peoples memories. Thankfully, Pompeii was rediscovered in the 1700's and the explorations and encounters of the past and bodies start in the mid 1800's.
During the Eruption
As the citizens were carrying on with their everyday life, Mt Vesuvius started to have a sudden blast which sent a huge cloud of black smoke and ash cloud surrounding the volcano. Of course, the citizens had no idea they were living so close to a volcano and thought it was nothing so they just ignored it and continued to do what they were doing. However, the volcano didn't stop there, in came scorching hot magma shooting from the crater. Everyone was panicking and evacuating as quick as they could, but for those who stayed behind, the conditions became worse. The atmosphere began to clog up with ash that fell making it difficult for people to breathe. The next day, the whole town was buried with ash and everyone living thing was dead. There was not much to find or see as everything has been demolished.
Pliny the Younger
There was only one eye witness of this disastrous event and that was Pliny the Younger. Archaeologists have found a letter Pliny the Younger wrote about what he say during the Mt Vesuvius eruption. Pliny the Younger was witnessing the eruption fromt he town of Misenum across the bay, where his uncle, Pliny the Elder died from doing a Pompeii Rescue Mission. Pliny the Younger was seventeen at that time.
