Average and Upper ClassBreakfast:
breakfast (jentaculum) was eaten very early, breakfast for the Romans usually consisted of salted bread, milk or wine, dried fruit, egg or cheese. Breakfast was not always eaten. Lunch: lunch (Cibus Meridianus or Prandium) was eaten at around noon. This was a very quick meal that usually consisted of salted bread, fruit, salad, eggs, meat or fish, vegetables and cheese. Dinner: Dinner (Cebu) was eaten at about sunset. This was the main meal of the day and was accompanied by wine. An average households dinner would include onions, porridge and pancakes. An upper households dinner would include meats, vegetables eggs and fruit. followed by a final wine course at dinners end. (Comissatio) |
Lower ClassAll meals:
Poor Romans would mostly eat cereal grain, as porridge or bread. These grains were ground up by the women during the day. |
Where was this food bought?
Many foods the Romans actually grew themselves. The poorer family's would grow and harvest these foods and sell them to the rich or baker's shops. Food could be bought in baker's shops, bars and other similar shops along the road where hot & cold drinks and snack are sold.
How did they eat?
The Romans ate their food with their fingers. They used knives made from antlers, wood or bronze with an iron blade to cut their food. They also had spoons made from bronze, silver and bone which they used to eat eggs, shellfish and liquids
